Origins of Pizza: Family Tour in Italy

Kicking Off Our Cheesy Adventure

Imagine combining the joy of pizza with the thrill of travel. That’s exactly what my family did on our tour through Italy, seeking the origins of everyone’s favorite pie. Packing our bags (and appetites!), we embarked on a cheesy adventure, uncovering delicious secrets and creating unforgettable memories. Along the way, we laughed, we ate, and we might have even learned a thing or two!

The Historical Slice: Naples

Our first stop was Naples, the birthplace of modern pizza. With its bustling streets and aromatic pizzerias, Naples offers a slice of history with every bite.

We learned that the classic Margherita pizza pays homage to Italy’s unification and Queen Margherita’s visit in 1889. My kids, enticed by the vibrant colors matching the Italian flag, voted it the best meal so far – until our next stop, that is.

A Roman Holiday With a Pizza Twist

Next, we rolled into Rome, where pizza takes a thin and crispy form. Roman pizza, or pizza al taglio, is sold by weight and boasts a variety of toppings. Between bites, we explored ancient ruins and baroque fountains, making history lessons far more palatable.

My youngest’s obsession with olives found its match in Rome, turning meal times into joyous olive festivals.

Sicilian Secrets: Beyond the Deep Dish

Our journey then steered us towards Sicily, where pizza means something a little different. Think thick, fluffy crusts with rich toppings. The island’s specialty, pizza alla Norma, introduced us to the sweet tang of eggplant. Sicily surprised us – its deep-dish pizzas were a hearty shift from our previous stops but equally delightful, especially when enjoyed on a sunny terrace overlooking the Mediterranean.

Tuscan Trials: A Wood-Fired Wonder

Tuscany was our next taste test. Here, the emphasis is on simplicity and wood-fired flavors. The Tuscan pizza experience, less about the cheese and more about the charred, smoky crust, proved that sometimes, less really is more. Our family cooking class in a rustic Tuscan farmhouse was a highlight, learning to stretch dough and fire pizzas like pros. It was messy fun with an incredibly tasty outcome.

Say Cheese! Wrapping Up Our Pizza Quest

As we concluded our Italian pizza tour, we reflected on our journey. Each region offered a unique flavor, a slice of its culture and history. More than just eating our way through Italy, we connected as a family, sharing laughs, surprises, and sometimes, the last slice of pizza. Now, back home, our Friday pizza nights have taken on new meaning, filled with stories and a sprinkle of Italian charm.
