Exploring Science with Toddlers

Engage with Nature Walks

Nature walks are a fabulous way for toddlers to learn about the world. Grab your little one’s hand and explore local parks or even your backyard. Point out different plants, insects, and rocks. Use a magnifying glass to give them a close-up view. It’s a sneaky way to wear them out while they’re learning! Trust me, those nap times become even more precious.

Simple Kitchen Experiments

Turn meal prep into a fun science session with simple kitchen experiments. Mixing baking soda and vinegar or watching yeast rise can mesmerize toddlers. These activities demonstrate basic chemical reactions they can see and understand. Plus, they get to eat some of the results! Just be prepared for a bit of a mess; it’s all part of the fun.

DIY Science Toys

Create your own science toys! Make a shoebox into a sensory box filled with different textures, or construct a simple pulley system with string and a bucket. These toys fuel curiosity and improve motor skills. Plus, your toddler will think it’s all just play. My little one still can’t get enough of our homemade marble run.

Colorful Crafty Chemistry

Get a bit crafty with chemistry using food coloring and household items. Make colorful ice melts or create a rainbow in a jar with liquids of different densities. Watching colors change and mix is pure magic for toddlers. I always keep our crafting space ready for those rainy days when we need an indoor activity.

Outdoor Science Adventures

Head outside and set up mini science stations. Use water tables for floating and sinking experiments or make mud pies to explore soil science. The outdoors provides a rich, sensory learning platform. On our last outdoor adventure, my toddler discovered the joy (and mess) of mixing soil with water to make ‘magic potions’.
