Christian Parenting: Teaching Pre-Schoolers Love & Respect

The Golden Rule in Everyday Action

Teach the Golden Rule: ‘Treat others the way you want to be treated.’ Practice this during daily activities. At meal times, show how sharing reflects this rule. On playdates, highlight taking turns and saying please and thank you. Use short, clear sentences to explain these concepts. Reinforce good behavior with praise. Make it fun with games that require cooperation, like building a tower with blocks. When they do well, celebrate their kindness. This encouragement helps them associate positive feelings with respectful behavior.

Use Playtime to Teach Respect

Playtime is perfect for teaching respect. Respecting others’ toys and space can be emphasized during this time. Create scenarios where your child has to practice asking for permission. For example, they can ask to borrow a toy or play a game. Give them choices to show respecting others’ opinions. Role-playing with dolls or action figures can illustrate these concepts. If conflicts arise, guide them to resolve issues respectfully. Keep it light-hearted with pretend play. This way, learning respect becomes a natural part of their routine.

Encourage Acts of Kindness Regularly

Encouraging acts of kindness can be an everyday practice. Start with small deeds, like making a get-well card for a sick friend. Praise their efforts generously. Use a kindness jar where they drop a coin for each kind act. Review these acts during family time. Share your experiences of helping others and how it made you feel. Have family challenges like a ‘Kindness Week’ where everyone does at least one kind act daily. Light-hearted competitions can make this fun. Celebrate the impact of their kindness, reinforcing the joy of helping others.
